■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ ◘ ■ To plant an Earthbox, you need: 1. An earthbox - My mother gave me one as a gift, but you can order one online at www.earthbox.com/. 2. Plants - Look for your local nursery and spends some time wandering around looking for things you'll either want to see and smell or eat frequently. I had plants forced on to me last summer and ended up really enjoying growing my own herbs and vegetables in particular so I looked for edibles at one of the many independent plant stores in my neighborhood. I bought lemon verbana, sweet basil, purple basil, tomatilla, arugula and tarragon from a nursery a few blocks from my home. I believe that you can plant up to eight items in the box, and you're encouraged to plant edible items. I have a large basket on my bike so I biked all of the seedling plants home, which I have to admit greatly added to the fun of the project. As I discovered in the process, you'll probably also need: 3. Measuring cup 4. Ruler 5. Scissors or knife 6. Plastic bags 7. A big tub or bucket 8. A small plastic dish with walls 9. A tea kettle or watering can Set up your box in a place that will get as much sun as possible. What you don't get in the instructions, though, is a ...

About two weeks after I started my garden from scratch, I did some succession plantings. Since I'm gardening food to eat, not look at, this will help me to grow more on my balcony garden and eat from it more than twice in a year. Succession planting is when you plant a new set of seeds about 2-3 weeks after your initial planting. The purpose of this is that it will keep you with a continual harvest. When you harvest the first set, the second set is growing right behind it. For more information, please visit www.UrbanOrganicGardener.com

www.guerrillagardening.org Watch guerilla gardeners transform Elephant & Castle, London. When Richard Reynolds began planting flowers secretly at night outside his tower block in South London, he had no idea that he was part of a growing global movement committed to combating the forces of neglect, land shortage and apathy towards public spaces. But before long, his blog GuerrillaGardening.org had attracted other guerrillas from around the world to share their experiences of the horticultural frontline, and is now a focal point for guerrilla gardeners everywhere, with over 4000 people enlisted as recruits. On Guerrilla Gardening is Reynolds's lively, colourful treatise on why people illicitly cultivate land and how to do it yourself. From discreetly beautifying corners of Montreal to striving for green communal space in Berlin and sustainable food production in San Francisco, from Christmas trees on London roundabouts to the political agitations of landless workers in Brazil, Reynolds charts a battle that people worldwide are fighting on many different fronts. Along the way he unearths the movement's notable historic advances by seventeenth-century English radicals, a nineteenth-century American entrepreneur and public-spirited artists in 1970s New York. Reynolds has researched the subject with guerrilla gardeners from thirty different countries, and compiles their advice on what to grow where, how to cope with adverse environmental conditions, how to seed-bomb ...

How to get children eating better food - vegetables and fruit primarily. Australia have devised a brilliant scheme. The women behind it - world renown chef, Stephanie Alexander, her idea is simple have fruit and vegetable gardens at schools and then take it a step further - have kitchens close by - so that the children learn to grow the food, harvest it, prepare and cook the food and to ultimately eat the food. It started in Victoria - it is now going nation wide. Brilliant idea.
